Ahead of his June 8 swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tendered his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu, who requested him to continue until the new government assumes office. Following the marathon six-week, seven-phase voting in the Lok Sabha elections 2024, results were declared yesterday. The BJP-led NDA secured 292 seats, triumphing over the Opposition alliance – INDIA, which secured 232 seats. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to take the oath on Saturday evening. Both the NDA and INDIA blocs are scheduled to hold crucial meetings today to chart the way forward. The contest between the BJP and the INDIA alliance reflects a broader ideological battle. PM Modi hailed the poll results as a “victory of the world’s largest democracy.” While the BJP had aimed for an ambitious target of 370 seats (including over 400 with NDA partners), they faced strong opposition from the Congress-led INDIA bloc, which secured 232 seats after an impressive performance that defied exit poll predictions and reduced the BJP’s advantage in key states.
