The Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee has officially announced that the Ramadan moon for 1446 Hijri was not sighted anywhere in Pakistan. As a result, the first Roza (fast) will be observed on Sunday, March 2, 2025. This announcement was made after meetings of various zonal committees across the country, including Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad, and Quetta.
Official Announcement by Ruet-e-Hilal Committee
The main moon sighting meeting was held in Peshawar under the chairmanship of Maulana Abdul Khabeer Azad. Despite clear weather conditions in some parts of the country, no credible reports of moon sightings were received. Religious scholars and meteorological experts participated in the meeting to ensure an accurate decision.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) had already predicted that due to partly cloudy weather, especially in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the chances of sighting the Ramadan crescent were low. At sunset, the moon’s age was around 12 hours, and the angular separation between the sun and moon was approximately five degrees, which made it difficult for the moon to be visible.
Ramadan Start Dates: Pakistan vs. Saudi Arabia
While Pakistan will observe the first fast on March 2, many other countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE, will begin Ramadan on March 1. The Saudi Supreme Court confirmed that the crescent moon was sighted on Friday, February 29, meaning Ramadan will start a day earlier in the Gulf region.
This difference in moon sighting is a common occurrence due to geographical and astronomical factors, leading to variations in Islamic calendar dates across different countries.
