Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi is slated to visit Pakistan on April 22, according to sources informed by Geo News on Monday. During his visit, President Raisi will be accompanied by a high-level delegation and is expected to hold meetings with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari, and military leadership.
The visit follows Tehran’s recent launch of over 300 drones and missiles at Israel in retaliation for an Israeli airstrike on its Damascus consulate, which resulted in casualties including senior commanders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
This visit is part of ongoing efforts by both countries to enhance cooperation, which experienced a setback earlier this year. In January, tensions rose between the two nations after Pakistan conducted precision strikes inside Iranian territory in response to Tehran’s cross-border attacks. However, diplomatic ties were eventually restored, with ambassadors returning to their respective posts.
President Raisi’s agenda reportedly includes discussions on bilateral ties, security cooperation, the gas pipeline project, and the possibility of a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two countries. Notably, the visit holds significance due to shared economic interests, particularly the Pak-Iran gas pipeline.
Additionally, Iran has announced its intention to release Pakistani nationals stranded on a ship seized by Iranian forces, following confirmation of their nationalities and completion of legal formalities. This decision underscores the strong ties between the two nations.
