Minister for Energy Owais Leghari has alleviated concerns regarding the solar net metering policy, confirming that no changes are being made to the existing framework.
During a Senate session chaired by Sherry Rehman, Leghari addressed attention notices and clarified that there have been no discussions or decisions to discontinue the solar net metering system. He noted that the adoption of solar net metering has significantly increased over the past five to six years.
Leghari attributed this growth to the substantial decrease in solar panel prices in Pakistan, making renewable energy a more viable option for citizens.
Additionally, the minister assured the Senate that the government has successfully managed the revolving energy debt, preventing it from escalating further. He emphasized that the government is actively exploring reforms in the power sector, including an agreement between Solar Net Metering and the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra). This collaboration ensures that the purchase and sale of energy will be conducted under a single contract, streamlining the process.
Welcoming investments in the solar sector, Leghari reiterated that the current net metering policy remains unchanged. He assured the Senate that any future modifications to the policy will be made transparently, keeping stakeholders informed.
