Pakistan to Introduce New Banknotes: Rs3.4 Billion Upgrade Project Awarded to German Firm

Pakistan is set to introduce a new series of banknotes with enhanced security features as part of a major currency revamp. To facilitate this transition, Security Papers Limited (SPL) has launched a Rs3.4 billion project to upgrade its paper manufacturing capabilities. The contract for this significant upgrade has been awarded to the German firm Giesecke+Devrient (G+D), a globally recognized security printing and cash-handling technology company.

The Rs3.4 Billion Upgrade: Key Details

The project is expected to span 18 months, during which SPL will modernize its production facilities to meet international standards. The upgrade aims to improve the security and durability of Pakistan’s currency notes, making them more resistant to counterfeiting and wear.

Giesecke+Devrient, known for its expertise in currency security solutions, secured the international tender with a contract worth €8.297 million. This partnership will help SPL incorporate cutting-edge technology and ensure Pakistan’s currency remains secure and reliable.

State Bank of Pakistan’s Roadmap for New Currency

The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) initiated the process of redesigning banknotes in January 2024. To ensure an inclusive and innovative approach, SBP held an art competition in March 2024, inviting designers and artists to contribute creative ideas for the new currency series. The winning designs were selected in September 2024.

SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad has confirmed that the first new banknote will be introduced in the second half of 2025. The rollout will be implemented in phases, ensuring a smooth transition from the existing currency notes. However, these redesigned banknotes will not enter circulation before the fiscal year 2025-26.

    Enhancing Security and Economic Impact

The collaboration between SPL and G+D highlights Pakistan’s commitment to enhancing the security and durability of its banknotes. By upgrading the manufacturing process, Pakistan aims to:

    • Reduce Counterfeiting: The incorporation of advanced security features will make duplication difficult, ensuring public trust in the currency.
    • Increase Durability: The new notes will be more resistant to wear and tear, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
    • Align with Global Standards: The move aligns Pakistan’s currency with modern international banknote designs, improving global credibility.

What This Means for Pakistan’s Economy

The transition to new banknotes signifies a step toward economic modernization. Enhanced security and durability will reduce financial fraud, while improved aesthetics and design could bolster public confidence in the monetary system. Additionally, this project aligns with Pakistan’s broader economic reforms aimed at financial stability and innovation.

As Pakistan gears up for this major currency shift, citizens can expect a seamless transition with greater security and efficiency in cash transactions. The first glimpse of the new currency series is eagerly awaited, and its phased rollout will mark a new chapter in Pakistan’s financial landscape.
