Pakistan’s Commanding Victory Over West Indies in Multan Test

In a remarkable display of dominance, Pakistan emerged victorious in the first Test against the West Indies at Multan, securing a convincing 127-run win to take an early lead in the series. The match, which concluded on January 17, 2025, was a testament to Pakistan’s clinical performance, particularly in the bowling department.

A Challenging Target for the West Indies

Set a target of 251 runs to win, the West Indies faced a daunting task on a pitch that increasingly favored spin. Their batting lineup faltered under pressure, collapsing to a mere 123 runs in their second innings. The duo of Abrar Ahmed and Sajid Khan proved instrumental in dismantling the visitors’ batting order, delivering a masterclass in spin bowling.

Abrar Ahmed was the standout performer, claiming 4 wickets for just 27 runs. His ability to extract sharp turn and bounce from the surface left the West Indies batters in disarray. Sajid Khan complemented him perfectly, taking 5 wickets for 50 runs and consistently troubling the opposition with his accuracy and variations. The spinners combined to account for 9 of the 10 wickets in the second innings, underscoring their dominance.

Key Moments in the Second Innings

The West Indies’ innings began on a shaky note, with opener Kraigg Brathwaite falling early to an impeccable delivery from Sajid Khan. The wickets continued to tumble as the middle order failed to establish any partnerships. Akeal Hosein showed some resistance, top-scoring with 31 runs, but his efforts were in vain as he found little support from the other end.

The final nail in the coffin came when Jomel Warrican, the last batter, was trapped leg before wicket by Abrar Ahmed for a duck. This wicket not only ended the West Indies’ innings but also capped off a commanding performance by the Pakistan bowling unit.

    Pakistan’s First-Innings Advantage

The foundation for Pakistan’s victory was laid in the first innings. Batting first, they posted a competitive total of 328 runs, thanks to crucial contributions from Imam-ul-Haq and Saud Shakeel, who scored 85 and 76 runs, respectively. Their partnership provided stability after an early wobble, allowing the lower order to add valuable runs.

In response, the West Indies managed only 200 runs in their first innings, giving Pakistan a substantial lead of 128 runs. Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah spearheaded the pace attack, picking up key wickets and ensuring the visitors never settled at the crease.

    A Clinical Second Innings Performance

Pakistan’s second innings saw them adding 122 runs to their lead, setting the West Indies a target of 251. While the batting conditions were challenging, Pakistan’s batters displayed grit, with Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan chipping in with useful contributions. The modest total proved more than sufficient, given the prowess of their bowlers.

    Post-Match Reactions

Speaking after the match, Pakistan’s captain Babar Azam lauded his team’s all-round performance. “The bowlers were exceptional, especially Abrar and Sajid, who turned the game in our favor with their brilliant spells. The batters also played responsibly, ensuring we had a defendable target,” he said.

West Indies captain Kraigg Brathwaite, on the other hand, expressed disappointment at his team’s inability to handle the spin-friendly conditions. “We need to address our batting against quality spin. It’s something we’ll work on ahead of the next Test,” he stated.

    Looking Ahead

The win in Multan gives Pakistan a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. With momentum firmly on their side, they will look to carry their winning form into the second Test, scheduled to be held in Karachi. The West Indies, meanwhile, face an uphill battle to bounce back and salvage a series draw.

This victory not only highlights Pakistan’s dominance at home but also serves as a confidence booster for the team as they continue to build towards upcoming international challenges. The spin duo of Abrar Ahmed and Sajid Khan has emerged as a potent weapon, promising more success in the matches to come.

    Conclusion

Pakistan’s comprehensive win in the Multan Test underscores their strength in home conditions and their ability to perform under pressure. With stellar performances from both batters and bowlers, the team has set a high standard for the series. As fans eagerly await the next Test, one thing is clear: Pakistan’s cricketing prowess continues to shine on the international stage.
