The Punjab government has launched the Roshan Gharana scheme to combat rising electricity bills, aiming to install solar systems in 4.5 million homes across the province. This initiative offers vital support to consumers facing high energy costs.
How Does Roshan Gharana Work?
Under this program, households will receive solar panels tailored to their monthly electricity consumption. Consumers using up to 50 units monthly will receive a 500-watt solar system for free. Those consuming between 50 and 100 units will get a 1-kilowatt system, while households using 200 to 300 units will be provided with an 1100-watt system. Larger systems will be available for those with higher consumption.
To qualify, residents must have an annual electricity consumption of up to 500 units and must be tax filers. Individuals benefiting from government assistance programs or with a history of electricity theft are not eligible.
Easy Registration and Flexible Payment Options
The registration process is straightforward. Interested households can send their ID card number and electricity bill reference to 8800. Successful applicants will be selected through a lottery and will have the option to purchase solar systems through the Bank of Punjab or National Bank.
Flexible payment options are available, requiring consumers to pay 25% of the total cost upfront with no interest. This will be followed by five years of interest-free installments added to their electricity bills. For consumers using more than 500 units, the government will cover 75% of the interest.
A Brighter Future with Solar Power
The Punjab government plans to install these solar systems between September and October, representing a significant move towards a cleaner and more sustainable energy future. By decreasing reliance on traditional power sources, Roshan Gharana aims to relieve pressure on the electricity grid and provide long-term savings for participating households.
As the program progresses, its benefits are expected to extend beyond individual homes, contributing to economic growth and environmental protection across the province.
