Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) President, Pervaiz Elahi, has taken a decisive step by announcing his candidature for the forthcoming by-elections scheduled for April 21. He has set his sights on contesting from the PP-32 constituency in Gujarat, a move precipitated by the vacancy left following the ascension of Chaudhry Salik Hussain to the position of Member of the National Assembly (MNA). The decision was further solidified as members of Elahi’s family visited him in jail to pledge their support, actively participating in the nomination process by signing his papers.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has meticulously laid out the electoral schedule, encompassing multiple seats across the National and provincial assemblies. The electoral landscape includes six vacant seats in the National Assembly, 12 in the Punjab Assembly, and two each in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan assemblies. Moreover, a solitary seat in the Sindh Assembly is also slated for the by-elections.
As the electoral machinery springs into action, aspiring candidates are permitted to submit their nomination papers from March 16 to 18. Scrutiny of these nominations is scheduled for March 21, with a brief window until March 25 for appeals against the decisions of the returning officers regarding the acceptance or rejection of candidatures. A pivotal moment arrives on March 28 with the publication of the revised list of candidates. March 29 marks the final opportunity for withdrawal of candidature and the publication of the conclusive list.
Symbolic representation in the electoral arena will be assigned on March 30, paving the way for the culmination of the electoral process with polling set for April 21. The Election Commission, cognizant of its paramount role in upholding democratic principles, has initiated comprehensive preparations to ensure the seamless conduct of the upcoming by-elections.
